Blankalicious Yoga

Leave your sticky mat at home and find a studio near you full of enchanting yoga blankets!

At the end of the Yoga workshop Ann declared, “That was Blankalicious!”.  Everyone present shared a warm laugh in recognition of her poignant statement, and began sharing stories of their love for their Yoga blankets.

Svaroopa ®Yoga created by Swami Nirmalandana, (formerly Rama Berch and founder of Master Yoga) is practiced with blanket and prop support within poses to help your body release into the postures.  The blankets are carefully placed by the instructor in areas to comfort and support the students unique body within poses.  Instructors go through a very thorough and intense training program with Master Yoga to become qualified teaching Svaroopa ®Yoga to people with all different body types.  You know this yoga is different when your instructor will ask you to leave your sticky mats behind, and gather 4-5 blankets to set up for Shavasana (a restful pose) to begin class.

Mary recalled the day she suggested to her neighbor Bonnie try this new yoga class she had just started.  In describing the yoga to Bonnie she stated, “… during Shavasana the instructor even covers you with a blanket, in fact I shed a tear the first time this happened to me”.  Bonnie said this comment brought her in for her first Svaroopa Yoga class over 2 years ago.  They were both part of the group that shared that “Blankalicious” moment.

Sisters, Donna and Linda started Yoga with Donna’s sister-in-laws encouragement.  “It’s a very nurturing practice, anyone can do it.  They use blankets to help support you in poses!”  So the three ladies began coming to class together.  After their first class Donna and Linda bought blankets to bring home with them.  On Donna’s birthday, shortly thereafter she gave herself a gift of additional blankets, so she could make her own Shavasana blanket support stack at home.  She reported her home practice was now ending in a restful like sleep in Shavasana, and just loves her blankets.

It wasn’t even halfway through Laurens first class with her mom when she said, “Mom can I get a blanket to take home with me?!”  The blankets come in the all the colors of the rainbow, and offer in themselves a different color on each of their sides.  They are manufactured in Mexico and unlike the all cotton types have a fluffy soft texture which is densely woven.  Lauren chose an orange and brown one.

Svaroopa ®Yoga studios all have a mountain of these colorful blankets. In fact the majority of the students have their own nurturing and supportive Yoga blankets at home.

Ann had expressed a great word to identify a key element that separates Svaroopa yoga apart from most other Yoga styles being practiced.  It’s simply “blankalicious” Yoga.
